I have no notes on this crossing. I return to New York after three years spent in France.
The wind being contrary at the moment of departure, we go up the canal St Georges [St George's Channel] instead of down it, to round the northern point of Ireland; we saw now the Irish coasts, now the coasts of Scotland; we passed near the isle of Man. One hears a ringing of bells.
In the neighborhood of Newfoundland we meet high mountains of ice, brought there by currents and grounded on the sea floor.
At sunset these glaciers take on rosy tints. Until they have melted they form a permanent danger to navigation.
