XVI — Arago, New York to Le Havre, 14 November 1857. We had a crossing of 13 days. The ship was commanded by Captain Lines, who had been captain of the three-master the IOWA. He was an excellent man, very popular on board, very amiable with the ladies.

When one is near arrival, and generally, when the pilot comes aboard, the captain, or rather the company, offers champagne wine for the last meal. It is the moment of rejoicing, of toasts and speeches; one drinks to the health of the sweethearts and wifes (santé des jeunes filles aimées et des épouses [health of the beloved young girls and of the wives]), to the health of the captain. He was wished a wife — an old maid still fresh and sentimental. Such wishes are quickly swept away by the wind.

This was my last crossing. I was weary of never having a settled position.
